The 73S12xx family of low-cost single-chip smart-card readers is built around a high-performance 80515 core, with an instruction set compatible with 8051/52. The chip only requires one clock cycle per instruction, delivering up to 24MIPS, similar to an ARM7. This performance makes possible encryption of a PIN and high-speed communication with cards and hosts. The chips come with built-in smart-card interfaces and USB connectivity. Applications include hand-held smart-card readers such as those used for e-banking, and readers built into laptops, or PC peripherals.
