Vincotech has started the production of its GPS modules. The A1084-A and A1084-B are based on the SiRFstarIII GPS modules. The modules consume less power and support passive antennas, a feature that is realised in the base version A1084-B. The A1084-A supports switching between two antenna inputs. This module offers a second input for external, active antennas. It addresses applications using external antenna for normal operation but might need the internal one as a fall-back solution. This feature is important in safety and security applications. The application can then switch from one antenna to the other.
The company has incorporated the SiRFstarIII based GPS module in the A1084-B on a footprint of 15x15mm². This version enables a direct connection with passive antennas. The module is completely shielded to avoid local interferences, as the passive antennas are located close to the module. Designs with integrated antennas are supported. The module features low current draw of 86mA in continuous tracking mode. This current draw can be further reduced by using different low power mode features of the SiRFstarIII chip. The module has good reception capabilities: with a tracking sensitivity of -159dBm, installation within the vehicle dashboard is possible. The module uses the SiRF firmware with improved acquisition sensitivity as low as -145dBm and allows the loading of Ephemeris data (the satellites' orbits). The module features improved start-up behaviour that is required for telematics applications.
The company has offered evaluation kits for testing and evaluating the features of the GPS modules. The evaluation kits can be used, for example, for a quick comparison in performance between active and passive antennas, or for temporary integration into a system. The detailed application notes that accompany the product provide valuable support during the customers' design phase.
