Power transistors from STMicroelectronics reduce the environmental impact of daily-use equipment—such as home appliances, HVAC systems, and industrial machines—by minimising the two major sources of energy loss in motor-control circuits. The STGW30N120KD and STGW40N120KD are IGBTs that have low energy loss when conducting—as do ordinary IGBTs—but that also reduce losses while switching. The devices use the company's PowerMESH process to achieve the lower switching losses that allow a higher operating frequency. In turn, this operating frequency allows for smaller and lower-cost components in power-control circuits. The IGBTs' compact, TO-247 package integrates the ultra-fast diode that is required by most circuits to save component count. These 1200V IGBTs are capable of surviving short circuits lasting up to 10µs, which makes them resistant to common causes of motor-controller failures, such as an error in the gate-drive signal, shorting at grounding, or breakdown of motor phase-to-phase insulation. The IGBTs are rated for 1200V operation, which allows use at higher AC line voltages, such as 440 or 480V. They are suitable for applications up to 30A (STGW30N120KD) or 40A (STGW40N120KD).
