A family of compact, ruggedised telematics devices with optional satellite functionality has been announced by Digi International. The ConnectPort X5 is according to the company, the industry's first family of telematics devices to incorporate cellular, satellite, GPS (global-positioning-system), Wi-Fi and VAN (vehicle-area-network) wireless technology in one device. The devices can be used for fleet-management and asset-tracking applications, providing remote connectivity to mobile assets, i.e. vehicles, via cellular or satellite networks. The devices have been developed using the satellite technology gained through the company's recent acquisition of MobiApps. The devices allow users to switch from one network to another—for example as a vehicle moves out of cell range—using the satellite to maintain connectivity: the benefits of cellular and satellite connectivity is that they provide instant, always-on communication. WiFi provides a cost-effective way to transfer less critical or less time-sensitive information—such as logs, firmware upgrades or larger files—across low-cost private or public WiFi networks. It can also be used to create a network in, or near, a vehicle with WiFi enabled devices such as vehicle displays or hand-held mobile devices. The on-board GPS enables location tracking and geo-fencing. For customers choosing the optional satellite version, the telematic device also includes a dome enclosure that optimises RF performance and simplifies, while reducing the cost of, the project's cabling and installation. The devices support VANs with the company's XBee 802.15.4/ZigBee or point-to-multi-point 2.4GHz radio technology. This allows users to deploy low-power sensor networks within and around the vehicle to monitor tyres, reefer units, door latches, temperature sensors, cargo sensors, RFID readers and other critical asset points for safety and security. An integrated three-axis accelerometer is also included that detects movement and records driver behaviour in accident conditions. The product family also features advanced power management, as well as Canbus, J1708 and J1939 support.
