Claiming a major breakthrough for the longevity of telecomms, storage, Blu-ray and medical products that use laser diodes, Pangolin Laser Systems has introduced Lasorb. The component protects laser diodes, photodiodes and LEDs against damage from direct and indirect ESD. It is described as an ESD absorber, protecting from single, multiple, and repeated ESD events of either positive or negative polarity. The component can also replace Schotty diodes, protecting against reverse-bias conditions. There are currently two versions of the component available; one optimised for red and infra-red diodes and a second optimised for Blu-ray diodes. The component package measures 8.9x10.4x3.8mm and mounts in a two-pin, through-hole configuration. Custom-designed packages are available.
