Renesas and Cavium Networks deliver reference designs for routers and switches
Renesas Technology and multi-core processor company, Cavium Networks will deliver optimised, high-performance, joint reference design solutions as part of a strategic collaboration. The designs will allow customers to incorporate the recently announced QUAD-Search TCAM (ternary content addressable memory) functionality with the latter's Octeon multi-core MIPS64 processors. TCAM compares data strings input from an external device with the data strings stored in the memory using simultaneous parallel operation and outputs the matches, enabling high-speed searching. The QUAD-Search TCAM includes four parallel independent search engines, which significantly increase lookup performance, says the company. The reference designs are targeted at high-end router and switch applications. They include pre-integrated hardware board designs along with optimised software drivers, APIs, and example applications. The companies believe that the reference designs allow network equipment manufacturers to design high-performance, packet-processing sub-systems that can address a variety of applications, including high-speed forwarding, deep packet inspection, security management, and quality of service. It will, according to Renesas, streamline the development process for mutual customers and enable new packet-processing systems.
