A development tool from Texas Instruments and an 850MHz DSP will speed up development for defence, networking, test, imaging and industrial applications, says the company. The TMS320C6457 DSP is based on the company's TMS320C64x+ core, with performances from 850 MHz to 1.2 GHz delivers 6800 (16bit) to 9600 MMACs and a cycle for cycle performance improvement of up to 30% compared to the comamny's previous DSPs. Performance improvements enabled by 2Mbyte of on-chip L2 memory (up to 1Mbyte cacheable), faster 32bit DDR2 EMIF (667MHz) and memory, cache and bus architecture enhancements. There is also high-speed interconnect with Serial RapidIO and Gigabit Ethernet MAC serialiser/deserialiser interfaces for efficient inter-processor communications. On-chip acceleration for wireless applications with two Turbo-Decoder Coprocessors and one Viterbi Coprocessor. This offloads the compute intensive FEC from the DSP core, freeing the DSP for other processing functions and tasks, thus lowering total system cost. The DSP is backwards code-compatible with other devices in the C62x and C64x DSP family for legacy code reuse which reduces development times. The TMDSEVM6457L development tool is supplied with software including a copy of the company's Code Composer Studio (CCS v4.2) development environment, as well as other production and demonstration software components.
