Designers can create energy-efficient portable and battery-powered applications with the TMS320C5504 and TMS320C5505 DSPs from Texas Instruments. The 150MHz devices offer the industry's lowest total power at less than 0.15mW/MHz and standby power at less than 0.15mW, claims the company. The processors feature up to 320kbyte of on-chip memory and multiple integrated peripherals that reduce system cost by more than 20% compared to earlier C55x processors. The C5504 DSP is for applications that require up to 256kbyte on-chip memory, such as portable voice recorders and MP3 players. The C5505 DSP adds an additional 64kbyte on-chip memory, an integrated display controller and FFT hardware acceleration for noise-cancellation headphones, musical instruments and medical monitoring.
