The ExtremeLink 3500 extender allows users to place a computer up to 500m away from the workstation area, connected with a single, inexpensive Cat 5 (or better) cable. Previously, this distance was only achievable with fibre optic cabling. The system from Icron Technologies, supports remote HD video, with the resolution not degrading with distance, and USB 2.0 devices, including control of the keyboard, mouse, webcam, flash drive, speakers, microphone and other USB devices, and features three USB ports on the remote extender. The units are available in silver or black and can be customised. Applications include security, medical, digital signage and industrial use where the computer can be located remotely to avoid harsh environments and to prevent unauthorised access. This is also claimed to improve data security and increases available work space by separating users from their PCs. Up to two units can be mounted in a 19inch or 1U rack.
