Imagination Technologies has released a graphics core for use in embedded and mobile applications. The PowerVR SGX554 can be implemented as an eight-pipe single core or in multiprocessor configurations using between two and 16 cores and 16 to 128 pipes. The addition to the company's PowerVR Series5XT family supports DirectX 9 feature level 3 with maximum hardware acceleration, making it suitable for tablets, computing devices and smartphones. It is claimed to offer the widest range of APIs of any mobile or embedded graphics IP core with support for desktop OpenGL 2.1, OpenGL ES 1.1 & 2.0, OpenVG 1.1 and OpenCL 1.1 Embedded Profile. The software stacks have passed Khronos and Microsoft conformance tests for fast time to market and across embedded and desktop operating systems. Cores are based on a second-generation Universal Scalable Shader Engine (USSE2) and include architectural extensions enabling low-power and high-performance for 2D, 3D and general purpose graphics processing in either single core or scalable multi-processors.
