SoCs that achieve playback of audio and video data in a single chip for portable audio-visual devices, including portable multimedia players, e-book readers and network TVs, have been announced by Renesas Electronics. The EMMA Mobile EV SoCs incorporate the ARM Cortex A9 high-performance CPU and integrate the functions necessary for MPEG2, MPEG4, and H.264 HDTV (1920×1080pixels) video playback on a single chip. The devices feature a reduced package of 9×9mm, which includes the DRAM within the same package. This level of integration contributes to miniaturisation of systems, eliminating the need for high-speed DRAM interface design. The company has also introduced the EMMA Mobile EV0-S SoCs, which do not include DRAM. The company claims that the SoCs have small package size as the chip size and pin count were kept low.
