Payton has designed Planar transformers with low leakage inductance in order to achieve high efficiency. This high power converter has good EMI performance, which calls for designers to develop a resonant topology.
Most resonant topologies need a small amount of inductance to work properly, so Payton has introduced a series of low profile, high efficiency, resonant inductors. The products can be positioned on top of the transformer in order to maximise use of the available area. The inductance can vary from 1 to 10µH and the current from a few amps to 100A. The inductance typically varies ±15% from -40 to +130ºC, which provides a stable resonant point. The dimensions of the 2.5µH/33A design are 70x65x30mm. The power dissipation is less than 15W and the temperature rise is less than 50ºC. The transformer is a 6.6kW design used in a battery charger.
