TDK has introduced the GBDriver RS3 series of SATA 3Gbit/s compatible NAND flash memory controller ICs that support high-speed access with a speed of 170Mbyte/s. In addition to 2 and 4Kbyte/page structures, they support 8Kbyte/page single-level cell and multi-level cell NAND flash memories. The ICs can also carry out high-speed SATA storage ranging from 128Mbyte to 128Gbyte. The ICs can be used in mobile internet devices such as smartphones and in audio visual devices such as Blu-ray disc players. The controllers are available in a 120pin TQFP package and a 144pin fine-pitch BGA package. The controllers perform high-speed control and incorporate error correction capabilities. The ICs also have data randomiser and auto-refresh functions, which are crucial for controlling the latest flash memories. They also feature an auto-recovery function and a collateral error prevention function in case of power failure. The controller ICs incorporate a static wear levelling algorithm that averages the number of times each memory block is rewritten. They are suitable for tablet PCs, thin client PCs and netbook PCs, automotive devices, office equipment, factory automation equipment, railway and transport equipment, banking terminals, medical and measuring instruments, communications and broadcasting equipment, and security terminals.
