Semtech has launched a regulator in its buck regulator platform that combines two PWM DC/DC regulators in a 2x3x0.6mm package. The SC197 is a 500mA, dual-output, POL regulator that has an overall design solution footprint of 80mm2. The regulator is suitable for power management applications in portable equipment, in addition to low-voltage, multi-rail power supply designs. In addition to the two on-chip regulators, the regulator has integrated 4bit pins to provide dynamic voltage scaling, without the need for external programming resistors. According to the company, the regulator's on-chip loop compensation eliminates the need for stability control components and a 3.5MHz fixed PWM switching frequency operation balances high efficiency and quick transient response.
Both regulators in the device operate from inputs ranging from 2.9 to 5.5V and provide 15 pin-programmable output voltages from 0.8 to 3.3V. An automatic power-save mode reduces quiescent current to 38μA per regulator to maintain high efficiency during light loads. The regulators offer protection features such as an internal soft-start to minimise inrush current; input under-voltage lockout; output over-voltage and current-limit protection; foldback current limit, short-circuit protection; and over-temperature protection. Full duty-cycle operation is also supported for applications with low headroom between the input and output.
