Freescale Semiconductor has introduced the QorIQ P2041 quad-core processor for UTM (unified threat management) security appliances. The processor combines Multicore processing engines with features such as hardware virtualisation, cryptography and deep packet inspection technology in a single-chip solution. In addition, the quad-core processor operates at 12W and is pin-compatible with the company's P2040 processor.

In addition to UTM systems and security appliances for server message block, the processor is suitable for applications such as LTE base station network interface cards, single-chip enterprise router solutions, multifunction printers, data centres, application delivery controllers, storage equipment, and switch management controllers.

The processor has four e500mc Power Architecture cores that run up to 1.5GHz. It is available in a 783pin and 23x23mm flip-chip pin grid array package. The processor has 10 SerDes lanes that support two serial advanced technology attachment controllers, two serial RapidIO 1.3 and 2.1 controllers, three PCI Express Gen 2 controllers, four 2.5Gbit/s SGMII (serial gigabit media independent interface) and 5Gbit/s Ethernet over reduced gigabit media independent interface.
