Power inductors from TDK-EPC are now available with an extended operating temperature and have an increased rated current. There are two sub-families, the VLM13580-D1 and DR. The surface mount power inductors are suitable for use as choke coils in the DC/DC converters of automotive engine control units. As components used in automotive electronics applications are exposed to severe environmental conditions, the company has improved the heat resistance properties of the power inductors. They can now be used at a temperature range from -40 to +150°C. In addition, the use of a ferrite core with low loss and improved DC superimposition characteristics achieves much higher efficiency than before, claims the company. The inductors feature a much higher rated current. For example, one version, the VLM13580T-2R2M-D1, is rated at 20A (maximum) compared to the 15A of the company's existing inductors. There are eight components available in the series, namely six D1 versions and two DR models. They are offered with various inductances. All inductors are RoHS-compatible and are suitable for lead-free soldering. The inductors are scheduled for mass production in October 2011.
