Torex has released the XC6229 series of low dropout regulator in a LGA-4B01 package. It measures 0.75x0.75x 0.3mm and uses the latest construction technique, making it suitable for space-saving designs. The company claims that the regulator provides significant improvements in thermal performance resulting in high power dissipation. The regulator also offers high accuracy, low output noise and high ripple rejection of 80dB at 1kHz. It delivers a drop-out voltage of 160mV at 300mA and helps in extending the battery life in portable electronic devices. It also includes a chip enable pin to turn the IC on and off, and a CL discharge function to discharge the output capacitor when the IC is turned off.

The regulator consumes a power of 100μA and includes a number of protection circuits. The regulator's thermal shutdown circuit stops the IC from functioning when the chip's temperature reaches 150ºC. This function is implemented using hysteresis, and will allow the regulator to resume operation when the chip's temperature drops below 125ºC. The regulator also has an over-current protection circuit that not only stops the IC when the output current is too high but also permits the IC to automatically resume normal operation as soon as the over-current condition disappears.
