Fairchild Semiconductor has developed an integrated PWM controller claimed to offer low standby power and high efficiency in a compact package size. The FAN6863 PWM controller minimises standby power consumption by using a green-mode function that provides off-time modulation to continuously decrease the switching frequency under light-load conditions. Under zero-load conditions, the power supply enters burst-mode, which shuts off the PWM output. The green-mode function allows the controller to attain a standby power of less than 100mW at no-load conditions. The PWM controller, packaged in a SSOT-6 package, is suitable for space-constrained designs. It provides a gate driving capability of 400mA for up to 40W applications. The controller has a surge capability of up to 7kV, and an integrated internal frequency hopping function that helps to reduce EMI emissions with minimal line filters.
