The 5MP image sensor released by OmniVision Technologies has been developed using the OmniBSI-2 pixel architecture. The 1.4µm backside illumination pixel allows the usage of 5MP in a ¼-inch optical format, making it a suitable solution for slim mobile handsets, smart phones and tablet computers.

The OV5690 image sensor has features including 1080p HD video recording at 30 frames per second, an integrated scaler, and 2x2 binning functionality with re-sampling filter. The scaler enables electronic image stabilisation, and maintains full field of view in 720p and 1080p HD video modes. The image sensor's post-binning re-sampling filter minimises spatial artefacts and removes image artefacts around edges, producing clean, crisp colour images for 720p and 60 HD video in binning mode. It features a two-lane mobile industry processor interface and LVDS interface, and fits into the 8.5x8.5mm module size with a z-height of less than 5mm.
