Texas Advanced Optoelectronic Solutions has announced its fifth generation sensor family, the TSL2x72 series, that delivers digital ALS (ambient light sensing) and proximity detection technology. . It includes TSL2572's digital ALS family, proximity detection sensing family and, digital ambient light and proximity detection sensing family. It enhances mobile products by providing ALS and proximity detection operation in environments over 60,000lux.
The device is based on the company's dual-diode architecture which can produce accurate ALS and proximity detection results when operating behind distorting glass regardless of the lighting sources such as sunlight, fluorescent and intensity. These features provide optimum smartphone ALS and proximity detection implementations to increase energy efficiency, extend battery life and improve the end-user experience, claims the company. The existing device's designs can migrate to the TSL2x72 while minimizes hardware and software design and development efforts. It incorporates an IR LED current limited driver, ADC, interrupt capability, and multiple I2C interface voltage options 3 or 1.8V.
Proximity detection is suitable for notebook and desktop computers to automatically turn off the display to conserve energy and maintain information privacy. To accelerate time-to-market and reduce design-in effort, the company provides EVMs (evaluation modules) and software support for device drivers and C-reference code including support for Android and Chrome OS. Designed for the compact space requirements of mobile products, the devices are available in 2x2mm dual FN (flat no-lead) package.
