Maxim Integrated Products has introduced the MAX98089, a stereo audio codec that is claimed to enhance audio performance and prevent speaker damage. To minimise the number of discrete components required, a jack detection detects the insertion and removal of accessories as well as button presses. The DAC to headphone idle power consumption is 5.6mW and is claimed to extend battery life. The codec is suitable for portable multimedia applications such as tablets, netbooks, and mobile phones. The device features the company's FlexSound audio technology which optimises the signal level and frequency response, while limiting the maximum distortion and power at the output. The audio technology is available with a toolkit for optimising loudspeaker playback performance and voice transmission. The GUI evaluates and then optimises the codec's five-band parametric EQ, ALC (automatic level control), speaker excursion limiter, speaker power limiter, and speaker distortion limiter. The codec is available as software drivers for Linux and other OS platforms. It integrates a class H stereo headphone amplifier with a dual-mode charge pump and operates from -40 to 85°C. It is available in a space-saving 3.8x3.3mm, 0.4mm pitch, 63-bump WLP or a 7x7mm, 56pin TQFN package.
