Texas Instruments has introduced the 16bit delta-sigma ADC with integrated PGA (programmable gain amplifier), reference, temperature sensor and four-input multiplexer for data acquisition of multiple signals from different sensors. Measuring 2x1.5mm, the ADS1118 provides direct, linearised measurements with uncalibrated error below 0.5°C from 0 to 65°C. It has a built-in internal reference supporting data rates up to 860samples/s. The converter is available in a QFN package, which is claimed to enable close proximity to sensors, lowering component count by simplifying cold junction compensation for thermocouples. It supports 2 to 5.5V power supplies while consuming 150µA and is claimed to extend the battery life of portable, battery-powered industrial devices for temperature measurement, gas monitoring, industrial process control, and instrumentation. The converter can be apired with an MSP430 microcontroller. The company offers many tools and support to speed development with the converter including an input output buffer information specification model, anti-aliasing filter tool for data converters and op amp to ADC circuit topography calculator. The converter is available in a 5x3mm MSOP package.
