Murata has enhanced the audio characteristics of its thin piezoelectric speaker, the VSLBP2115E1100, which measures 0.5mm in thickness. Optimising the speaker's structure and the use of latest materials reduce distortion and increase sound pressure level without any change in the speaker's size, claims the company. Distortion is claimed to have been reduced by 50% in the voice frequency region of 2- to 4kHz. Sound pressure improvements have been made in the frequency regions of below 1kHz, says the company. The speaker is suitable for use in narrow spaces and compact personal electronics devices. According to the company, using a piezoelectric device within the speaker eliminates the need of magnetic elements. Since no EMI is created, the speaker minimises the likelihood of magnetic particles contaminating the speaker surface.
