OmniVision Technologies has unveiled an HD image sensor using 1.75µm OmniBSI-2 pixel technology. The 1/6inch OV9770 provides 720p/30 HD video capture in notebooks, tablets and portable media players. According to the company, OmniBSI-2 technology allows for a large collection region in the photodiode, delivering increased sensitivity, improved image quality and enhanced colour reproduction. The sensor is claimed to have an optimal die size, low power consumption, and significant performance and image quality characteristics. It can capture 30frames/s in 1280x720 resolution without degradation or image artefacts due to scaling or cropping, claims the company. An SCCB (serial camera control bus) interface delivers full-frame, sub-sampled or windowed 8- and 10bit RAW images and is claimed to provide image processing functions including exposure control and defective pixel canceling.
