The HPC12 from Stackpole is a high power handling SMD (surface mount device) resistive device. It is rated for 5W of power in free air, but can handle 12W continuously with 400LFM (linear feet per minute) air movement on standard recommended solder pads with no heat sink needed, claims the company. The housing for the resistor provides heat transfer to the ambient air from the thick film element. The company says that terminals are attached with high temperature solder and can withstand a full minute in a 300°C bath with no degradation. The resistor can withstand surges of over 2000W for pulse durations of less than 10µs.
The resistor is suitable for industrial and commercial power supply applications, motor controls, aircraft and aerospace, remote telecomms and datacomms power systems, test systems for power controls and power ICs, petroleum exploration equipment, and mining equipment, medical grade monitors, remote sensing, and wind measurement systems. The resistor is available in tape and reel packaging.
