STMicroelectronics has expanded its set-top-box portfolio by unveiling details of its forthcoming broadband set-top box SoC IC for home entertainment.
Codenamed Orly, the IC features an energy-efficient multi-core ARM CortexT-A9 MPCoreT processor, which has good capabilities enabling optimised playback of content and applications through software environments such as AndroidT, Qt and the HTML5 open internet standard. The IC is also claimed to support Adobe Flash-based gaming, media and data-driven applications that take advantage of an optimised version of Adobe AIR and flash player. Dedicated processing engines will deliver good graphics rendering, multimedia experience and security robustness, claims the company.
The IC can choose from many middleware stacks, which connect components and their applications via computer software, in order to filter data for privacy protection, provide interaction with other services, as well as offer assistance in handling secure transactions, says the company. According to the company, the IC can support RIAs (rich internet applications) on platforms such as AndroidT, taking advantage of Adobe runtimes.
