A handheld, 4.8inch control display unit developed by IEE, uses 3M's 3D film which means the user does not need to wear 3D glasses to use it. The two companies are working together to produce the 3D displays for custom applications. Initially developed for use in terrain mapping, remote robotics control and enhanced video feeds, the display is making its way in virtually all rugged, military display applications from remote observation to training environments. The handheld unit measures just 3.45x5.98x1.22inch. It uses LED backlight technology to create a low power, portable device claimed to have a higher resolution than other displays using 3D technology. . Resolution is 800x480xRGB with a typical brightness of 200cd/m2 in both 2D and 3D modes. Optimum viewing distance is 16inch. The 4.8inch display decreases off-axis image reversals and colour distortions, a common concern in the use of 3D technologies, and can be switched to 2D, producing images comparable to the latest smartphones. A system integration development kit allows developers to work with 3D display technologies and related software will be available for government agencies and prime contractors in Q1 2012. Technology demonstrations are available now, with units scheduled to ship in Q2 2012.
