Samsung Electronics has announced a high resolution 1.2Mpixel CMOS image sensor SoC, the S5K8AA. The SoC is claimed to support high definition video and video telephony that can be used in camera modules less than 3mm for slim mobile designs, says the company. The imager is claimed to provide high-quality, vivid images for video calling on smartphones and tablet devices. The image sensor SoC supports 30frame/s at HD video and 60frame/s at VGA resolution. It is claimed to offer good low-light sensitivity during real-time video capture by using the company's 1.4µm backside illumination pixel technology. The CMOS image sensor provides 1.2Mpixel resolution and fits into a 5.5x5.5mm camera module with a 2.8mm profile. The CMOS image sensor has an integrated image signal processor for high-density, compact measurements and optimised internet service provider functionality, says the company.
