Two 20V step-down voltage regulators from Texas Instruments have the company's PMBus digital interface and adaptive voltage scaling for non-isolated PoL designs. Combining analogue voltage regulation with digital control, the 2MHz TPS40400 single-channel controller, operating at three to 20V input, and the 1.2MHz TPS40422 dual-channel or multi-phase controller with 4.5 to 20V input range, achieve greater than 90% efficiency. The adaptive voltage scaling capability saves up to 25% more power than previous solutions, according to the company and eliminates the need for up to 12 external components. The controllers achieve even greater power efficiency when paired with the company's NexFET power MOSFETs, such as the CSD87350Q5D. The devices meet the high performance, low risk digital power management needs of telecomms, cloud computing data centres and mobile Internet infrastructures. The controllers' parameters can be configured to monitor and control the power system using a GUI software tool. Both controllers can be combined with the National 17V LM25066 system power and hot-swap protection IC to create a PMBus-compliant solution for 12V systems with input protection and power conversion.
