Overtaking its own best on-resistance/area product, STMicroelectronics has added the STW88N65M5 to the MDmesh V MOSFET family for power density in 650V rating. The company claims that it can improve a key efficiency metric by more than 23% and save energy lost as heat emitted by power-conversion circuitry in solar power converters, power supplies for consumer products and lighting controls. The 0.029Ω on-state resistance for 650V devices is the industry's lowest in the standard TO-247 package, claims the company, bettering the benchmark of 0.038Ω set by an MDmesh V device. Engineers can increase energy efficiency by replacing MOSFETs of higher resistance or to use fewer devices in parallel and so reduce assembly sizes and bill of materials costs. All of the MOSFETs in the family provide a greater safety margin than that offered by other 600V devices to withstand voltage surges on AC lines.
