Power Integrations has published the DER-297, a reference design of compact driver for a B10-style LED light bulb. Based on the company's LinkSwitch-PL non-isolated, single-stage LED driver IC, the power supply is specifically designed for use with high-voltage LEDs such as the Cree's XLamp XM-L and XT-E ranges. The driver provides the high-voltage output required by the LEDs and reduces power loss due to current flow in the driver inductor and output diode.
The high level of integration in the LinkSwitch-PL device combines power factor correction and constant-current functions into a single buck-boost stage requiring only a small inductor. The driver has 115V AC for a power of 4.3W and achieves a power factor of more than 0.9, meeting EN61000-3-2 Class C limits, and creating low total harmonic distortion.
