Epson has announced its industrial EPDs (electronic paper displays), which consist of EPD microcontrollers with integrated firmware. The thin and lightweight EPDs display sharp text and image without using power, as they do not need a backlight, claims the company. The displays are suitable for use in electronic shelf tags, digital signage, advertising displays, and point of purchase displays. The diplays have the S1C17F57 16bit microcontroller for 64-segment displays used in digital watches and calculators, and electronic paper driving waveform firmware. They also have the S1D13T03, electronic paper timing microcontroller and electronic paper timing control firmware for active-matrix displays. The displays support up to 320 segments when they are combined with the low-power driver. They enable the creation of EPDs without changing the CPU of an existing LCD, according to the company.
