Epson's semiconductor division has just developed an innovative new LCD controller device that can drive high-resolution display panels up to XGA image levels. The S1D13513 controller IC enables external connection of up to 64Mbytes of SDRAM to run features such as 16 sprite functions and simultaneous display on three separate screens. This reduces load on the main CPU (central processing unit) and achieves high-level display quality. The versatility of the controller allows an array of CPU-interface modes to be realised within the design, running connection verifications for more than 10 types of processor chip. It also features two camera-input ports, enabling YUV signal output (2x8bit or 1x16bit) from a camera to be imported and displayed on-screen. The controller is suitable for a wide range of applications, in both industrial and consumer environments, including on-board automotive devices, factory automation and office equipment.
